  • The MNAAP’s chief legislative goal for the 2014 session cleared its first legislative body on April 23 when the Newborn Screening Restoration bill it passed the Minnesota State Senate.   The Senate bill, authored by Sen. John Marty (DFL – Roseville), passed the Senate on a strong bipartisan vote of 41-22. The bill has been sent to the House of Representatives where it is likely to be considered very soon.
  • A package of funding pieces and changes to fight childhood obesity continue to move through the legislative process. Among the provisions are increased funding for building and maintaining schools, bike paths, and trails near schools, as well as expanded access to free school lunches for underprivileged kids. Another piece of the package would require the Department of Education to study physical education programs in Minnesota and report back to the Legislature.
