MNAAP Executive Director Jeff Bauer and Past President Sheldon Berkowitz, MD, FAAP, will be traveling to Poland in mid-December to provide support to Ukrainian refugee relief efforts.
The pair is working with International Medical Relief which, in partnership with the Polish Ministry of Health, has been working to provide acute primary medical and emergency medical services to Ukrainian refugees (mostly women and children) sheltering in Poland. With colder weather coming, International Medical Relief is expecting another large influx of refugees over the next several months. They are in great need of pediatricians to go over to provide care in the shelter clinics. Dr. Berkowitz will be attending as a medical volunteer, Jeff Bauer is going as a non-medical volunteer.
If you are interested in volunteering your time and medical expertise, the cost to go is $2,600 (which can be fundraised using personalized donation pages on their website if you want) plus airfare. The cost covers housing, most meals, and transportation to and from the clinic each day. Spouses/partners are also welcome to come as non-medical volunteers. The approval process for medical volunteers takes about 3 weeks, as all doctors have to be pre-approved by the Polish Supreme Medical Council.
