Maslon Edelman Borman & Brand LLP

Maslon Edelman Borman & Brand, LLP selected as the 2013 MNAAP Child Advocacy Award Recipient

State law requires that all newborns be screened for over 50 types of treatable disorders between 24 and 48 hours of life unless parents refuse the screening. Maslon's probono representation helped preserve newborn screening bloodspots/ results for over 1.1 million Minnesota children and  their families after plaintiffs filed suit against the Minnesota Department of Health, alleging violations of the Minnesota Genetic Privacy Act. On behalf of several concerned parents, Maslon filed two motions to intervene in order to protect the integrity of Minnesota's newborn screening program. The law firm’s combined legal efforts ultimately demonstrated that the plaintiffs did not represent all Minnesota parents and called into question a 71-day retention period for all blood samples.

The pro bono work of three attorneys (David Schultz , JoLynn Markison, and Rachel Bowe) at the Maslon law firm is recognized.
